How to educate your children on sex education

Sex education is an important topic for discussion to children. Every parent should make it a priority to educate their children on the things to know about sex so as to prevent teenage pregnancies and other consequences of lack of sex education. In Ghana and certain parts of Africa, parents find it very difficult to teach children on sex education because they think is a bad subject for discussion. Below are some points which parents can utilize in teaching their children on sex education:

1. Start Early and Keep It Age-Appropriate

There should be a slow start on sex education as a parent. You have to begin with basic concepts like body parts, privacy, and respect when they’re young. As they age, you can add topics like puberty, relationships, consent, and sexual health in a very polite discussion.

2. Use Correct Terminology

The parent is advised to use the correct terminologies in their quest to offer sex education to their children. You have to teach them the correct names for body parts. This broadens their mind and makes them much aware of their body.

3. Encourage Open Communication

Build trust in the child so that he or she can openly ask questions. This fosters communication and prepares the child to grab the basics of what is being taught.

4. Discuss Consent and Boundaries

Teach your children about respecting other people’s personal space and bodies. This enables them to be mindful of how their bodies are being touched in the right or wrong ways.

5. Talk About Relationships:

At this point , let the child know about emotional aspects of relationships, such as love, trust, and how relationships evolve.

6. Introduce Reproductive Health

This is an important part of the process where the core needs are being taught. The parent is encouraged to teach the child on menstruation, ejaculation, sexual intercourse, and contraception. The parent should try as best to use polite language and explanations.

7. Be Honest but Respectful

The Parent should be respectful and is encouraged to use only appropriate language for discussion.

8. Use Resources

Seek out reliable, age-appropriate resources that offer guidance to children such as books and educational materials on sex education .

9. Be Patient and Revisit Topics

Sex education should be continuous for every stage of the child’s developmental process. Keep the child updated about sex education at the right time to avoid forgetfulness and ignorance.

10. Create a Safe Environment for Learning

Ensure that the child feels comfortable asking questions and that they won’t be judged or shamed. This makes the child more comfortable his or her surroundings.
